Squadron A - Your Club in New York City
All members of Gold’s Dragoons are familiar with Squadron A of New York City, our annual rival at the Polo Cup Final we play at the end of summer in Westport, CT, in aid of our military charity, the Equus Effect.
We have many members in common but we want to encourage more troopers of Gold’s Dragoons to consider applying for membership of Squadron A, which will give them a club in the city at modest cost. This can be especially attractive for members of much more expensive New York clubs that are being used less as the member retires or moves to the suburbs. For city residents the annual 2020 membership fee is approximately $500, including tax. For out-of-towners, classed as nonresident, it is approximately $300, including tax.
As every avid reader will know, writers from P.G. Wodehouse through Evelyn Waugh to James Bond’s Ian Fleming would demand that every gentleman should have at least one club in town. This applies whether they live in town or not.
There are many advantages to joining Squadron A and the initiation fee is waived at the moment. We understand that the selection committee will look favorably at any member of Gold’s Dragoons in good standing recommended by a member of our Board of Directors, but all prospective members will be interviewed by the Club.
There is a full dining room for members and a bar decorated with the memorabilia of Squadron A. The club offers overnight accommodation for members and their friends at reasonable prices. Your Mess President lived in the club Monday thorough Friday for two years and can attest that the food is excellent, having sampled virtually every dish.
If you have an important business breakfast, lunch or dinner, why not hold it in the privacy of a club rather than a public restaurant? The Club has special rates for members for corporate and social events in the ample meeting spaces and saw the Mess President’s daughter married there in fine style in 2019.
The ninth floor has a balcony with one of the best views of New York and is the floor location of the business center with Wi-Fi, terminals and printers for out-of-towners to work. There is a cloakroom to leave overcoats if the weather is better than expected and also a place to leave briefcases and bags if the business meetings are over and personal entertainment begins.
Located at 3 West 51st street, catty-corner from St. Patrick’s cathedral on Fifth Avenue, transportation is very convenient with the E line subway station at 53rd and Fifth a four-minute walk away. In the shopping area of the subway station is the best shoe shine in NYC, according to some.
The Club enjoys reciprocity with great clubs around the world that permit members to stay with a letter of introduction from the Executive Director of Squadron A, Mrs. Julia Nelson. To get a sense of the Club, please log on to www.squadrona.org and for membership inquiries, email Julia at squadrona.nelson@gmail.com.
