Historical Weapons
Are you Tomahawk Qualified? Did you serve in the armed forces after 1898, following the introduction of smokeless powder, and have never smelt gunpowder from your personal weapon? Are you less than truly intimidating with a bayonet? Do you know how to defend yourself against saber-equipped cavalry? Did you serve in the artillery with brass shell casings, propellant charge bags and rotating band projectiles and have no knowledge of how to load a black powder cannon? It’s never too late! Join us in 2024 and you will be fully trained for the 18th Century!
Our Master at arms, Col. Ron Barnes, is planning a "Skill-at-Arms" training session and competition for 2025, at a date to be announced. Members and guests will be instructed in the use of the regiment's original weapons: saber, musket and bayonet, pistol and tomahawk (and bow and arrow, in honor of our original 1657 enemies), as well as light cannon, photographed below.
The location of the event will likely be the Major General Nathanael Greene Homestead at 20 Taft Street, in Coventry, R.I., where the barn will be available for our use and where a lunch and historical musical revelry is planned after the event. Spouses, friends and adult children are welcome to participant. Non-participants and younger children may join us as guests.
No ordinance projectiles will be discharged and all weapon stations will have a trained safety officer in attendance, but everyone must be aware that they attend at their own risk and all participants must sign a legal release of liability.
In the interim, our Master at Arms is planning our annual axe throwing contest in Bridgeport, Ct. at some later date. It is particularly appropriate that Gold's Dragoons, which incorporates an axe in its cap badge, should develop skills in this area. The "Golden Axe", to be awarded annually, was won in 2022 by Stephen Ryan with a score of 67. Runner up was John Conlin with 60. The two-man team event was won by Rory Capra and John Conlin with a score of 137.
