The
2017 Gold's Dragoons polo cup final was preceded by our annual polo dinner dance held at the Fairfield
Hunt Club on Saturday, August 26th. This is also
our annual guest night when we invite spouses, adult children and other friends to share an evening with
Gold's Dragoons. This was our largest dinner ever and was completely sold out.
Guests were entertained on arrival by the Gold's Master of Horse,
David Loda, who galloped up to the Club veranda in splendid scarlet style, bearing the Gold's guidon and presented it to the mess president, John Conlin.
During
and after dinner we were entertained by the
top-class Johnny Morris orchestra, including a very moving rendition of "Amazing Grace"
whereby the duty piper, Terence McGovern began as a solo, was joined by the orchestra in
increasing volume until they then faded into silence leaving the lone piper, who then slowly
left the dining room. At this point our gifted soloist, Gretchen Tucker completed the trilogy
by singing "Amazing Grace" a capella. She then continued with songs from the 1930's and '40s to
celebrate our 85th anniversary of being mustered in as a Connecticut militia cavalry troop.
The trophies
for the spring shoot were presented by the Polo Captain, on behalf of shooting captain Hugh Schoelzel, to
Jeffrey Wacker who won the Michael Daly Memorial Cup and is
thereby awarded his marksman badge for his mess dress jacket. Jeff also won the Golds Dragoons Shooting Plate, which is open
to non-members, so he swept the board.
Under the direction of the Polo Secretary, Bill Harris, Phillip Teuscher and Ms. Gretchen Tucker each performed the traditional sabrage
with a saber on two champagne bottles and the polo cup was filled with
the proceeds, duly shared among all the polo players, foxhunters and members of Gold's. Photos of the 2017 dinner are below.
